As professional school counselors, we work with students on an individual basis, in small groups and in their classrooms. Our focus is on academic skills, career awareness, social/emotional well-being, and social skills.
Here are some reasons students might want to talk to the School Counselor:
- "I had an argument with my best friend and she doesn't want to be my friend anymore".
- "Some kids in my classes are talking about fighting after school".
- "My parents argue all the time and I don't know what to do".
- "My grandfather is really sick and I'm scared he doesn’t have much time left".
- "My mom just had a baby and she doesn't have time for me anymore".
- "We're moving again".
- "My parents see my future totally different then I do".
- “I need a strategy to help boost my grades”.
- “What do I have to look forward to in High School”?
- “What is college”?
Here are some reasons why parents might want to talk to the School Counselor:
- Your child is having difficulty adjusting.
- Your child has experienced the death of a loved one or is dealing with an illness in the family.
- Your child needs help with coping skills.
- Your child used to be excited about school, but lately doesn't seem to care.
- There is a recent change in the home or family and your child could use some help understanding this.
- Your child seems to be the target of some teasing and bullying after school. Can you help?
Did You Know?
1. If a student is absent from school for more than one day, a parent may call the Counseling Department early on the morning of the 2nd consecutive day out to arrange for homework.
2. Some teachers post their homework on the school website. Look under staff and if your teacher's name has a link, there is a good chance that they update their homework daily.
3. If your child forgets books or other necessary homework materials in school, the door near the Principal's office is open until 9:30 p.m. The child must be escorted by an adult for safety reasons.
4. If you are planning to move out of the school district, it is wise to notify the Counseling Department as early as possible to arrange for records to be sent ahead of time. This makes for a much easier transition for the student.
5. If you change your phone number or home address, please call the Counseling Department.
Groups
We offer a variety of groups based on our student's needs. Some examples of the groups we offer include, but are not limited to, study skills, socialization, and relaxation techniques. If you feel your child would benefit from participating in one of our groups, please contact your child's school counselor.
